No doubt about it but that environmentalism is big in marketing these days. Everyone it seems is trying to connect their product or service in some way with saving the earth. How carbon friendly they are and the ways that whatever it is that they're selling was made from recycled raw materials. So then what about garden studios?

The fact is there are many aspects of garden studios that make them good for the environment, and it begins with their foundation. That is that they can be installed on pier blocks rather than a complete concrete foundation. So then how does this one aspect alone make them carbon friendly?

It makes a huge difference because the manufacturing of concrete is an incredibly energy intensive process. You see, limestone has to be baked at very high temperatures to make cement, and petroleum or in many cases even coal is used to power the kilns. Coal is incredibly dirty and bad for the environment.

Then again something else to consider, is that a garden studio, not being part of the main house, isn’t being heated or cooled full time like all the other rooms in a home are. This of course means that they save on utility bills, but that they also save on the earth’s environment because that's just that much less carbon being released into the atmosphere.

Garden studios are also perfect for setting up an off the grid solar power system, and a lot of today's new owners are doing just that. They're smaller so they don’t require but perhaps one large panel and maybe a couple of car batteries to power the lights in the evenings. It's affordable to set up, and a good first step towards making your entire home energy independent.

On a similar note, unlike so many homes, garden studios are very easy to seal up and insulate. Take a look under your home for instance and what you'll find is that it most likely doesn't have any insulation under the floor boards. A full and complete insulation job on a garden studio though that include the underside is a snap.

Due to its smaller size and the fact that you have a say in what does and doesn’t go into it when it's being installed, you can use natural biodegradable insulation like cotton. Then you can also floor it with tiles or carpet that is made from recycled plastics. Or, you can roof it with new roofing tiles made from recycled tires.

In the end, the problem with too many home is that they're already built by the time a new owner comes along. Now sure they might have plans to make them greener, but everything has to be retrofitted, or is prohibitively expensive. On the other hand, with a garden studio you have so many more affordable options to make yours environmentally friendly.

Green Studios manufacture and install a range of Garden Studios rooms made from sustainable materials. The range is ideal for use as a home office or music studio.
