Perhaps you can recall some years back when the popular phrase was "the future is in alternative energy". Well guess what? That was then and this is now because the future has arrived sooner than a lot of people thought it would. The prices folks have to pay for energy has risen as the technology in alternative energy products has continued to become more advanced.
Now one of the areas that have seen the most improvement is wind power turbines. Self contained wind generators that you can now buy right off the shelf, ready to go in a complete assortment of sizes and configurations. In fact you may be surprised at some of the newer designs that are now being developed and brought online.
Some of the more impressive are actual spinning helium filled balloon devices that eliminate the need for a tower, and that can also be reeled in and tied down when bad weather blows in. You see, the cost of erecting a tower can account for well over half the cost of a wind turbine system and bad weather can cause damage as you can well imagine.
Now the positive side of a wind power system over a solar system is that a wind turbine produces electricity at night and that's huge selling point. Then the big the downside of a wind turbine is that you need to have the wind. Not just a little wind but a fair amount of it blowing more often than not, to make your turbine system pay for itself.
Now there may be more wind than you realize blowing perhaps a hundred feet above our home, but then again if it is you have to weigh the cost of building a tower to get to it, and as noted above, a good quality tower is an expensive proposition. The higher you go, the more costly they get.
Now for vacation cabins the big plus for a wind power system over a solar system made up of photovoltaic solar panels, is security. That is that while an expensive solar panel can be pulled up and carted away by a thief, a wind turbine is harder to get to at the top of a tall tower. There are also theft prevention bolts you can buy.
If you have a boat or travel trailer, a small compact wind power system may also be your best option over a solar system for a few good reasons. For starters, a wind turbine on a small sectional pole or tripod is easier to set up then break down, and stow. Also on a boat in particular, there is the space issue. Solar panels just require a lot more room.
For your home though, what most people opt for after everything has been considered, is a power system that's made up of a combination of solar and wind energy components. For those who have enough sun and wind available to justify it, a combination system is a more reliable source of greater amounts of electricity.
