When the choice comes down to petrol or electric saws, what you really are talking about is chain saws. Which type to go with? You could have an electric model that only requires that you plug it in or one that's powered by a gas motor. Now the fact is that someone who has never had to decide simply doesn’t know what a difficult decision it can be.
This is because both petrol and electric powered chain saws both have their positive attributes. At the same time though, each style also has its fair share of shortcomings as well. Hence, it really can be a bit of a juggling act as you try to make up your mind on which of the positives and negatives you want to keep, and let go.
The first positive aspect of a petrol powered chain saw to consider is its mobility. Quite simply you can pick it up and take it anywhere and you don't need an electrical plug to run it. Now mobility is a big one to consider because after all you will be using your chainsaw outside.
Then again for around your home and on construction jobs, you will always have an electrical plug handy to power an electric saw with. Also as it pertains to construction work, an electrical saw is so much safer to use. It's powerful enough for wood frame cuts, and you don’t have to the risk of jamming and kickbacks like you do with a more powerful petrol powered saw.
The again if you're going to be cutting through heavy beams, or even larger wood stock like 2x8s and above you may want to go with a petrol powered chain saw because for heavy cutting jobs an electric saw quite often isn't powerful enough. Do keep in mind though, that you will be able to have more control for accurate cuts with an electric model.
Two more big plusses for an electric chain saw are that they're cheaper to buy, and you don't have to start them to use them. Simply plug it in, pull the trigger and away you go. That versus being stuck pulling the cord trying to get a stubborn motor to start. Also there is of course no need for petrol with an electric model.
Now if you drive a car you may want to consider that transporting both the petrol powered chain saw and the can of petrol that goes along with it in your car can be a messy affair. Even if you carry them in your trunk, all it takes is a small spill and you can be left with a persistent odour and nasty stain.
So in the end, when all things are considered, it's easy to see why so many folks opt for buying one of each. Yes a petrol powered saw is more expensive but for power you just can't beat it. Then while an electric model doesn’t have the power that petrol powered saw does, you just can't beat it for low price and convenience.
